Dental Implants vs. Dentures and Partials

The Difference Between Dental Implants and Dentures

When something happens and causes you to lose a tooth or several teeth, the first thing you will probably think is “I need to get this fixed.” Although you may feel like you need to get it fixed right away, it is important to sit back and look at all of the options you have. It can be difficult to choose which option is the best fit for you, so you should take some time to do your research and look at the different variables that may make some options better than others for your circumstance. Choosing the right solution depends on factors such as price, preference, and the health of your jawbone and remaining teeth.

Dentures, partials, and dental implants each have their advantages and disadvantages, so it is crucial you talk with your dentist about exploring every option. They all ultimately serve the same purpose which is helping you chew foods, support facial muscles, improve speech, and increase your self-esteem, however, there are some significant differences between each of them including:

  • Comfort & Reliability- There is no question that dental implants are far more comfortable than dentures and partials. They are permanently fixed in place, ensuring there is no shifting, slipping, or falling out like dentures can. Dentures rely on the presence of your remaining teeth to hold them in place and would be of no use if the surrounding teeth decay or fall out.
  • Cost-Dentures are a much cheaper option and do not require waiting a long period of time to receive. They can be trial-tested and you can receive them within 1-2 weeks
  • How Invasive- Implants require surgery, while dentures do not. Dentures are far less invasive but are only suitable for you if your gum tissue is healthy.
  • Maintenance- Dental implants are much easier to maintain than dentures or partials. They are cared for the same way your natural teeth are. Dentures require more thorough cleaning and care.
